The major disease of the sebaceous gland in humans is acne (also known as acne vulgaris). It occurs mainly on the face and to a lesser extent, on the back, chest and shoulders. The sebaceous gland is a holocrine gland in which the entire cell is cast off into the excretory stream. Sebaceous glands are distributed mainly on the face and scalp, although they can also be found in the labia minor (small lip of the vagina) and on the scrotal skin, trunk, nipples and eyelids. These glands produce sebum which is an oily secretion that protects our skin from loss of moisture. They are controlled by direct hormonal stimulation by androgen hormones, derived from the gonads in both sexes; in the female, but not in the male, adrenal androgens may be important factors in maintaining the production of sebum.
