Acne is a common problem for teenagers, adolescent, and even some adults.Very few things damage your self confidence as much as active, painful and most of all visible acne lesions.  To help combat the problem of acne, science has put a great deal of time and effort into developing an effective acne treatment.

A wide range of treatments for acne

Because each person is a little bit different, it often takes a bit of testing and trying different things to find the acne treatments that work best for each individual.Luckily, there are genuinely hundreds of possible choices available to help you in treating your acne problems.

The majority of acne treatments will fall into one of these categories:

Mild cleanser - You should have no problem finding these products in your local drug store.  They contain mild ingredients that work to cleanse your face of dirt and bacteria, a primary cause of acne problems.

Chemical - Some products are available over the counter, some only on prescription, but all are effective in reducing the occurrence of acne by using one of various different chemicals that are successful in eliminating bacteria.Common examples are salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide.

Prescription - An expanding range of prescription drugs are available to help treat acne.As these acne treatments work in different ways you can be sure that no matter how severe your own acne is, there will be a treatment that can help.  You must see a doctor or dermatologist to get a prescription for these medicines; they are not available over the counter.

Other - New and different acne treatments are created on a fairly regular basis but your current choices include light therapy, laser resurfacing, chemical peels, and pulse light treatments.Normally a doctor, dermatologist, or other skin specialist would have to recommend these types of acne treatments.

Stay clean, stay clear

If you can keep your skin clean and bacteria-free you are giving yourself every chance of beating acne.  Bacteria are the primary cause of acne, so the more you can keep it away the more likely you are to keep the acne away as well.

Keeping your skin clean, however, does not mean you need to scrub it or rub it heavily. If you do scrub your skin hard you will almost certainly irritate it which will very likely lead to more bacteria causing more acne lesions.  Less is more when it comes to cleaning your skin; use a light touch with less pressure, washing your skin no more than twice per day.

Medical companies are in business to sell their products, so they will claim they have the solution to your acne problems, however many of their products will contain the same or very similar ingredients to their rivals comparable product. You will know when you have found a good acne treatment if it makes it easy for you to thoroughly clean your skin without any side effects like dryness, flaking, itching or any general irritation.

If one product causes unpleasant side effects for you, either reduce your use of that product or change to a different product.  Regardless of the products you choose to use, remember that it takes time for them to work.  Try to stick with a product for at least a few weeks or so to give it time to work; if, after that time, you are not getting the results you want then move on to something else.
